Case Study: 03 Title: The nature of kcal

I have seen a lot of confusion on this subject.

In a nutshell what is perhaps more commonly known as one Calorie is also one kcal. A kcal is a unit of energy and one kcal is still one kcal whether it originates from vegetables, barley, beef, ragwort (not recommended) or something naughty-but-nice.

Some products may have nutritional characteristics, considered advantageous by experts and not seen in other products but a kcal is still a kcal no matter where it originates from. Nutritional matters beyond the remit of this website.

A true calorie (small c) is actually 1000th of one Calorie and of course one kcal. Hence the k in kcal, a well known character denoting one thousand in IT circles. Also now well known in popular parlance, when someone earns 30K a year. kcal is a contraction of kilocalorie just as app is a contraction of application, as used on smart phones.

The contraction kCal is often seen though as I see it, kcal refers to 1000 small calories and should therefore read kcal, which is what has now been adopted here, site wide.

Kcal mostly seen on food labels, though not necessarily on promotions (see Case Study 02). That's because the slithery people schooled in the black-arts of promotions, know their punters are more familiar with the term Calorie, using large C, small c or capitals.

So, wherever we see Calorie or calorie, in this context, read kcal, hence the website name.
